Wilson 1834

Walter Hebden Wilson of East Kilbride and Janet Russell of nearby Dunipace were born into long- established Scottish farming communities. They married in 1806 and soon moved to Glasgow, where Walter completed his apprenticeship and established himself as a master baker. Their family life unfolded within a rapidly expanding industrial city, where opportunity was accompanied by overcrowding, disease, and periodic instability.

By the early 1830s, worsening urban conditions—intensified by the cholera epidemic—and encouragement from family already in America prompted a decisive change. In 1834, Walter and Janet left Scotland and traveled to Illinois, settling near St. Charles in Kane County. There they exchanged urban trade for frontier labor, helping establish one of the county’s early homesteads.

Their journey reflects a two-stage migration—from rural parish to industrial city, and from Scotland to the Illinois prairie—guided by resilience, adaptability, and the determination to secure stability for
the next generation.
