Hardy 1858

Sidney W. Hardy was born in 1826 in Jefferson County, New York, into a family shaped by generations of movement. His Hardy ancestors were of English Puritan origin, settling first in Massachusetts in the seventeenth century before gradually relocating to New Hampshire and then to upstate New York in search of land and opportunity.

Lydia Helen Lott, born in 1835, descended from Dutch families who emigrated from the Netherlands in the mid-1600s and established themselves in New Netherland, later New York. After her father’s death, she moved with her mother to Carlton, New York, where she met Sidney.

Married in 1854, Sidney and Lydia soon joined the broader westward migration of the 1850s. After unsuccessful farming efforts in New York, they traveled through Michigan and ultimately settled near Shabbona in northern Illinois in 1858. There, Sidney became the first of his Hardy line to establish permanent roots in the state, transforming generations of migration into lasting settlement on the Illinois prairie.
