Stolt 1854

Johann Friedrich Christian “Fred” Stolt, born in 1830 in rural Pomerania, Prussia, grew up in a farming family facing economic hardships and compulsory military service as he came of age. In 1854, he emigrated to Illinois, likely motivated by both limited opportunity and the threat of military conscription. Though unable to read or write, he brought with him the discipline and skills of farm life.

Settling in Elgin’s growing German immigrant community, Fred first worked as a butcher, then opened a grocery store, and eventually became a successful dry goods merchant and property owner. In 1866, he married Augusta Weber, who had immigrated from Hesse as a young child in 1848 and was raised on a Cook County farm. Together they built commercial stability, with Augusta operating a millinery business.

After Fred’s death in 1880, Augusta remarried and faced several moves and economic losses. Despite the challenges, Augusta demonstrated exceptional determination and resourcefulness, ensuring her family’s well-being and sustaining opportunities for future generations.
