Reed Davis was born in 1814 in Arkwright, Chautauqua County, New York, a frontier settlement shaped by the westward movement of early New England families. His paternal line had resided in Massachusetts ever since an ancestor settled there in 1634, until his father moved to western New York in search of affordable land and better opportunities. Reed was raised in a setting that blended inherited New England traditions with the practical demands of pioneer life.

In 1839, as northern Illinois opened to settlement, Reed continued that generational progression westward, traveling to Kane County and claiming federal land near St. Charles. There he undertook the work of establishing a farm on open prairie. Reed married Helen Wilson in 1840; she lived on a neighboring farm and had come to Illinois from Glasgow, Scotland, in 1834.

Together, Reed and Helen’s lives joined two migration streams—long-stablished American movement and recent transatlantic immigration—rooted in opportunity, perseverance, and the resolve to create permanence on the Illinois frontier.
